Lampung (July 11-15, 1999)

Lampung Province, geographically, is not too far from Jakarta (see the map).  However, to reach the area that we headed took us a good 10-hour drive (incl. 1 hour ferry ride) from Jakarta.  It was a relocation area for people transmigrated from other islands to start a new life (mostly farming).  Little we knew that the place where we were about to stay was surrounded by Moslems and Hindus.

We stayed in a house of a lady evangelist who had been there for more than 10 years.  The condition where we stayed in were pretty basic.  They cooked with wood fire in a ground-floored hut with no electricity. The quality of water that they had from the well was “impossible” (within our city standard) to take a bath with, leave alone to drink from.  Each time we want to take a bath we had to draw the brownish-color water from the well to fill in the tub in the bathroom.

The staying condition provided there was totally contrary to our “spoiled” flesh.  All of us were born in a city, grew up in a city, and still live in a city.  Yes, we did not expect five-star hotel facilities but we absolutely did not expect what we had.  You know, after a 10-hour drive, you’d “dream” of warm bath and good bed which was none available.  However, the excitement to see what God would do through us in our 3 day services overcame those natural inconveniences.  We still had fun as we would have had if we had stayed in a Hilton hotel.

The next three days were rewarding spiritually.  We got to see the lost saved and the sick healed.  We had no idea what kind of crowd we’re going to have, however the Holy Spirit led us how to lead the praise and worship, what messages to deliver, and how to close the services.  After each service we had lunch together and we distributed a package of staple for each family.  The second day was the most exciting because the crowd that the lady evangelist managed to gather was Moslems and Hindus. Some of them were reluctant to talk with us and when asked the reason why they came, they said it was to get the staple package.  However, God knew best how to touch people’s heart.  Through unusual praise and worship service and also a wonderful salvation message, two-third of the crowd came forward to receive healing and get saved (even the gentlemen who refused to talk with us!).  God is awesome!

This trip will definitely not be our last.  We have made commitment with the Lord that whenever He wants us to go, we go; wherever He sends us, we go.  The One who calls us is able to perform His call through us.
